Dubrovnik
The latest archaeological research has shown that Dubrovnik originated in ancient times. In the period of 6th and 9th Century, the city identified itself and protected with the walls. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the middle Ages it became the Republic of Dubrovnik as the only city - state on the east coast of the Adriatic being a rival to Republic of Venice. With its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15 th and 16 th century. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable Croatian poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.
